2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the trend in gaming appears especially powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
