Giorgia Meloni Denounces Union Leader for ‘Courtesan of Trump’ Remark
The Italian Prime Minister has strongly condemned the leader of the country’s biggest trade union after the official described Meloni as a “courtesan” of former US President Donald Trump.
Background of the Disputed Remarks
Maurizio Landini, leading the CGIL union, made the statement during a television appearance on Tuesday. This came just after global figures, Meloni among them, participated in a Middle East peace summit in Egypt.
Landini accused the Prime Minister of “doing nothing” to advance peace in Gaza, remarking her involvement was confined to “playing Trump’s courtesan”. Thankfully, the Italian citizens took to the street to defend the honor and dignity of Italy,” he commented.
Official Reaction
On her social media accounts this Thursday, the Prime Minister remarked that the union chief was obviously obscured by increasing animosity (that I comprehend)”. She proceeded to post a meaning of the expression “courtesan”.
“I think it is widely understood the usual interpretation attributed to this term, but, to assist anyone unfamiliar, I’m publishing the initial definition located via a brief online search,” the Prime Minister stated, including a screenshot that read: “Promiscuous woman, heterosexual; polite expression, sex worker.”
Meloni further condemned her leftwing opponents, noting that for a long time they had preached to us on gender equality” only to then disparage a woman by “labeling her a prostitute”.
Landini’s Clarification
In response to Meloni’s statement, Landini maintained that there were “no sexist insults” toward the Prime Minister and that he had used “Trump’s lackey”.
Through an official comment, he said: “In a 10-minute interview, which anyone can easily rewatch, to clarify any confusion or twisting of the words, I made it clear what I meant – that the Prime Minister was on the coat tails of Trump, she was in Trump’s circle, she acted as Trump’s subordinate.”
Meloni’s Relations with Trump
The Italian leader has consistently maintained amicable ties with the American leader. While addressing the audience in Egypt, Trump addressed the Italian Prime Minister – the only woman at the event – and called her “beautiful”. “In the US, it would be career-ending,” he noted. “However, I will risk it. Is it alright if I state you are beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”
Trump later praised her as “motivational to all” in regarding the English translation of her publication, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which contains a introduction by Donald Trump Jr..
Previous Incidents
During the summer, the Prime Minister reacted strongly after finding out that doctored photos of her and other well-known Italian females had been posted on a adult site, expressing her disgust, and offering “unity and backing to every woman who have been violated, insulted, and offended”.
