‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Light-based treatment is definitely experiencing a moment. Consumers can purchase light-emitting tools for everything from complexion problems and aging signs to muscle pain and periodontal issues, the newest innovation is an oral care tool enhanced with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Globally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. Based on supporter testimonials, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.
The Science and Skepticism
“It appears somewhat mystical,” notes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, too, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Types of Light Therapy
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. During advanced medical investigations, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Red and blue LEDs, he says, “don’t have strong medical applications, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, improve circulatory function, oxygen uptake and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – an important goal for anti-aging. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. There are lots of questions.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. What it did have going for it, however, was that it travelled through water easily, enabling deeper tissue penetration.
Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits
Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” notes the researcher, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is always very good.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, swelling control, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
