Rare Crimson Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies
A team of image specialists in New Zealand have managed to photograph visual evidence of red lightning, counted as the rarest atmospheric displays in the world, where bright red bursts become visible in the heavens.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists initially planned to photograph the night sky over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the extraordinary event.
They thought they would be fortunate to get good weather that night, but their night became “a night to remember,” one photographer remarked.
Upon examining his images for a stellar landscape and realized he had captured red sprites,” the individual said. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the darkness.”
Understanding Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the mesosphere, caused by electrical storms. Unlike lightning that shoots towards the ground, these events propel upward towards the mesospheric region, producing structures that look like vertical forms, tapered shapes or even jellyfish. The initial image of a this phenomenon was recorded – by chance – in 1989, by a team at the an educational institution.
Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings
They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the unaided vision, but one photographer had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing right at a sprite when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence looking at the correct area of the sky and I witnessed a momentary scarlet burst,” he commented.
Witnessing the phenomena was a goal for the photographer, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to see.”
Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery
Capturing a such an event requires a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with science and creative flare, the photographer said. “It’s a really involved category of art that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
One of the other individuals commented it was counted as the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I could see the starry river illuminating above the horizon while these enormous red tendrils of light moved above a storm far on the horizon,” he described.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no further recordings capturing red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in one frame.
“It represented a unique instance when you know you are seeing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
