Significant Web Failure Impacts Dozens Sites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale web disruption has impacted many websites and applications globally, and users noting troubles accessing the internet following issues at the online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted apps include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-owned services including its main retail website and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of problems using the the tax authority online portal on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring users turned to networks to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, accounts of disruptions on specific platforms totaled the tens of thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the outage started in the Atlantic coast of the US at the cloud division, a division that supplies essential online backbone for many companies, who rent out resources on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the most extensive cloud computing system.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “higher error rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the US. The widespread consequence was seen to hit apps around the world, and the problem monitoring service showing problems with the same sites in different parts of the world.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, also reported a increase in outages on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the outage originated.
