UN Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Ahead of White House Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip the following week.

Sharaa was named interim leader following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of civil war.

The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions in his role as head of the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of global extremist entities in July.

More Penalties Removed

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and allied countries for their support the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity for national reconciliation".

The pair met initially in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria until he severed ties in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to America this year. In September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

During his address, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
